The Wear Analysis Laboratory in the Zinman Institute of Archaeology, University of Haifa, is the first arena for the study of use-wear analysis in Israel. Since 2011, activities at the laboratory focused on providing functional explanations for archaeological objects. Analyses are applied to archaeological objects made of various materials (stone, bone, wood, metals, pottery, shells and others) from prehistoric to historic times, and by combining experimental archaeology, past activities are being reconstructed using replicated objects made of authentic materials.
The Laboratory comprises a unique platform for teaching the methodological frameworks of use-wear analysis (in Hebrew and English). Lessons and workshops are integrated in the Archaeology department curriculum and students participate in active research and experiments.
The Laboratory also collaborates with other use-wear laboratories abroad, providing a platform for academic interactions and access to databases and reference collections. This collaboration also aims to support joint research on South Levantine material, student exchange for MA, PhD, Post doc programs and joint participation in workshops, conferences and excavations.
Our laboratory welcomes new projects from all over the world!
